Why The Space Is Creating Its Own Film About Launch Season 9

At The Space, every season tells a story.

Not just through choreography or performances, but through growth — the quiet moments, the breakthroughs no one sees, the challenges dancers carry with them when they walk through our doors each day.

This year, for Launch Season 9, we made a decision that felt both natural and bold:

We decided to tell that story ourselves.

That decision became The Space Between — a feature-length dance film created and produced entirely by The Space, documenting a full season of training, artistry, and transformation.

More Than a Dance Film

The Space Between is not simply a performance film.

It’s a portrait of what it really means to pursue dance today.

Over nine months, cameras follow our dancers through rehearsals, conversations, setbacks, victories, and everyday life. The film blends documentary storytelling with cinematic musical dance sequences, capturing both the reality and the inner emotional world of young artists chasing something bigger than themselves.

Because the truth is:

The most important part of a dancer’s journey doesn’t happen on stage.

It happens in the space between.

The space between training and artistry.

The space between confidence and doubt.

The space between who you are and who you are becoming.

Why We Chose to Produce It Ourselves

For years, we’ve watched dancers grow inside our programs — developing not only technical skill but resilience, identity, and voice. We realized that no outside production could fully understand the culture, relationships, and community that define The Space.

So we chose to build it from within.

Creating the film ourselves allows the story to remain honest and personal. The teachers, families, and dancers aren’t characters — they are collaborators. The camera isn’t observing from a distance; it lives inside the experience.

This approach reflects what Launch has always been about:

dance

Artists learning to create, not just perform.

Our dancers are witnessing firsthand how art is made — from choreography and filmmaking to storytelling and production — expanding their understanding of what a creative career can look like.

Launch Season 9: A Year Worth Documenting

Launch has always been designed as more than a training program. It’s a bridge between student life and the professional world.

Season 9 represents a powerful chapter — dancers navigating auditions, balancing school and work, building confidence, confronting fear, and discovering their individuality within a community.

Some moments are loud and celebratory.

Others are quiet and deeply personal.

Together, they form a story shared by artists everywhere.

By documenting an entire season, The Space Between captures something rarely seen in dance media: the process, not just the result.

Blending Reality and Artistry

One of the defining elements of the film is its structure.

Real interviews and documentary footage introduce each dancer’s journey, while cinematic dance sequences express emotions that words cannot fully describe. These musical moments represent the inner world of the artist — dreams, pressure, hope, and perseverance made visible through movement.

It mirrors what dancers experience every day: reality and imagination constantly overlapping.

A Film About Community

At its heart, The Space Between is not about individual success.

It’s about community.

The Space has always believed that growth happens faster — and deeper — when artists support one another. The film captures friendships forming, mentors guiding, and dancers learning that their journey is connected to something larger than themselves.

No one grows alone.

And that truth may be the most important story the film tells.

Why This Matters Now

The dance world is changing. Careers are no longer defined by a single path or destination. Today’s artists must be adaptable creators — storytellers who understand performance, media, collaboration, and identity.

By producing our own film, The Space is stepping into that evolution.

We are not waiting for opportunities to document our dancers’ stories.

We are creating them.

The Premiere — A Celebration of the Journey

The season will culminate in a red-carpet premiere, where dancers, families, and supporters gather not just to watch a film, but to celebrate a shared experience.

Because when the lights come up, the real achievement won’t simply be what appears on screen.

It will be the growth that happened along the way.

The courage gained.

The friendships built.

The artists discovered.

The Space Between

Every dancer lives in moments of uncertainty — between effort and outcome, fear and belief, preparation and opportunity.

That is where transformation happens.

And that is the story we chose to tell.
